Writing Papers (Successfully)

Some Hints

  1. The first step is to read many papers critically. It's ok to imitate the style of authors whose papers you like.
  2. Be crystal-clear. Make an effort to write parsimoniously, but unambiguously. Search for the best word.

Useful Tools

I use the following set of tools to write my papers. Your mileage may vary.

  • latex or pdflatex for writing. Many journals and conferences provide templates.
  • JabRef for managing references, integrates well with bibtex and latex.
  • Subversion (svn) for version control and synchronizing versions with co-authors.
  • StylePal for discovering bad diction.
